Cameron
Highlands Resort is located in the state of
Pahang, approximately 200 km north of Kuala
Lumpur on the east side of the border between
the states of Perak and Pahang in Malaysia.
At about 1,500 metres above sea level, it
is the highest area on the mainland stretching
along a plateau set high above the river valley
and enjoys a cool climate and fresh air. Temperatures
fluctuate between 22° and 25° Celsius
during the day and between 15° and 22°
Celsius at night.
Cameron
Highlands was named after William Cameron,
a British Government surveyor who discovered
it in 1885 whilst on a mapping expedition.
However, he failed to mark his discovery
and it was not until 1925 that Sir George
Maxwell recorded Camerons discovery
and decided to develop it as a hill resort.
British expatriates would frequent the highlands
to relax and escape the lowland tropical
heat, and British planters soon realised
the potential of its fertile mountain slopes
for growing tea, then a prized commodity.
Cameron Highlands is still home to many
tea plantations, as well as strawberry and
vegetable farms, jungle trails, cascading
waterfalls and rose gardens. Much of the
highlands' character remains unchanged,
exuding an old English charm.
Directions By Road - From The South
1.
To drive up Cameron Highlands from the South,
take the North-South Expressway and head
up north.
2. You will pass the following towns along
the North-South Expressway: Rawang - Tanjung
Malim - Slim River - Sungkai - Bikam - Bidor
- Tapah - Gopeng - Simpang Pulai.
3. There are two roads leading up to Cameron
Highlands. One is the old road from Tapah
town and another from Simpang Pulai, which
is the new route.
Tapah
Exit
There
are some narrow and sharp turns that you
have to be careful of if you are taking
this route from Tapah. Sound the horn if
you feel you need to let oncoming traffic
know of your existence behind that sharp
bend. There will also be heavy vehicles
going up and down this road, so be careful
when overtaking another car. There is mobile
phone coverage for most the way up Cameron
Highlands and you will find interesting
stalls along the road where the Orang Asli
display their handicraft and forest products
for sale.
Exit
the Tapah Interchange (Exit 132) on the
North-South Expressway after passing Bidor
town. At the traffic lights right after
the tollbooth, turn left and follow the
road all the way up to Cameron Highlands.
Simpang
Pulai Exit
The
new route from Simpang Pulai is less winding
and the road is wider. As such, drivers
tend to speed here, but watch out for the
sharp bends at some stretches. There is
no mobile phone coverage along this new
route up Cameron Highlands. However, the
driving time is shorter compared to the
route from Tapah even though the distance
is further.
From
the North-South Expressway, exit at the
Simpang Pulai interchange (Exit 137). Turn
right and follow the road signs up Cameron
Highlands. You will pass by Kampung Raja,
Kuala Terla, Tringkap and Brinchang before
reaching Cameron Highlands Resort in Tanah
Rata.
Directions By Road - From The North
1. If you are coming from the states up
North of Peninsula Malaysia, head down south
towards Kuala Lumpur via the North-South
Expressway.
2. Exit the Simpang Pulai interchange (Exit
137). Turn right and follow the road signs
up Cameron Highlands. You will pass by Kampung
Raja, Kuala Terla, Tringkap and Brinchang
before reaching Cameron Highlands Resort
in Tanah Rata.
